19/08/2013 - This year’s round Ireland challenge proved to be exactly that…
The Round Ireland Powerboat & RIB Challenge 2013 saw 27 boats from all over Europe on the starting line at Kilmore Quay, Republic of Ireland, on the 27th July – set for the very first attempt of an anti-clockwise circumnavigation of Ireland by a powered flotilla.
A total of 19 boats lined up for the the punishing near 1000 mile voyage on the 5th August and 4 of those boats were manufactured here at the Humber Ribs site in Hull. With each Humber Rib boat living up to their outstanding reputation even as conditions worsened and the shortcomings of vessels and crews were exposed, we were proud to have such a strong presence.
Humber Ribs took the endurance race by storm, with the likes of the Humber Sea Wolf & the Apple Attaque leading the way with their robust commercial strength hull’s and every Humber Rib entry finished under their own steam and without assistance.
As many already know, the Humber Attaque was the first RIB to cross the Atlantic single handed, skippered by Irish man Enda O’Coineen way back in 1979 so as you would imagine the bespoke built Apple Attaque and the customers favourite Ocean Pro did as expected.
The Humber Sea Wolf has already won the 2009 World Record for completing the Round Ireland Circumnavigation in the fastest time, which was completed in 19 hours, 9 minutes and 50 seconds beating the existing record by 4 minutes. The Humber Sea Wolf excels in all conditions, when lesser crafts are found wanting true commercial heritage; the Humber Sea Wolf exceeds all expectations with its original design and structure. This craft is an exemplar of Humber Ribs dedication to performance and sea-keeping.
The Humber Destroyer later designed in the 1990’s has endured extensive sea trials in the harshest of conditions, to achieve without doubt, a perfect performing RIB that is in a class of its own and is now proving to be just as sea worthy as the Ocean Pro.
